Our Ohio youth gun hunt was this weekend so Isaac and I went out Sat. morning. We had a doe come in to 30 yards and we got situated and he got the gun up and was getting ready to shoot when Isaac asked "Dad...can you uncock the gun?" I said yes and did so and asked why? He said " I don't want to shoot her....I want a buck." WOW was I proud that he just didn't want to kill the first deer that come along. He knew what he wanted and was going to wait on it! We didn't see anything else and didn't get a chance to go again til tonight. We went out and sat down and we was "PLAYING" with the grunt call....I would blow it and then Isaac would. I was showing him how to do a buck grunt and doe bleats with it. To say we over called would be an understatement. There was some calls that sounded more like ducks than deer.....but we was having fun!!! The wind stopped and I told Isaac that we should be quiet and just listen and not more than 5 min. later I see a buck come into the woods from the powerline right of way to our right. I tell Isaac that I see a buck and point it out and he sees it right away and he slowly shifts and brings the gun up. The buck is steadily walking from our right to our left right in front of us. I tell Isaac to wait.....when the buck is 23 yards straight in front of us and in the clear, I grunt and stop him. He stops right in the clear and I whisper "Right behind the shoulder and squeeze the trigger". There is a pause and then "BANG" The deer kicks up in the air like a horse and falls flat on his face and then flips over, gets up and runs to about 30 yards to our left. He stands for a second then disappears over the hill. I hear thrashing but decide to wait. All we could do was wait about 10 to 15 min. and we had to go look and this is what we found!!
He shot this deer right thru the heart...I coundn't have placed the shot any better!! He wanted me to show him the heart with the hole in it!!
FW707 and Orome: After a couple pics Isaac said..."Now for the 1000 yards stare picture Dad"

Went bow hunting last Friday on the last day of archery season. About 8:00 this buck came out checking scrapes and making new rubs and he was working his way towards me. He got to about 35 yards at one point but he never gave me a shot opportunity and he casually walked off through the swamp. Since Sat. was the rifle opener and the wind forcasted to be perfect, which stand I would hunt the next morning was a no brainer. I went and checked the trail camera I have up about a half mile away from the stand and sure enough he had been eating clover a few nights earlier. I got there early Saturday morning and right at daybreak the biggest fox squirrel I have ever seen came scurrying up beside me. He had done the same thing the previous morning I hoped it was an omen. Right at 7:45 I looked up and saw the sun reflecting off antlers and I knew instantly it was him. He took the same route as the day before and what is just out of bow range is a chip shot for a .270.
This is my cousin. He wanted to pet it. |
